Assist with counter poaching and illicit wildlife trafficking

It all started when…

Camiel and Anouk first met in 2012 and founded Dutch UAS (www.reddeneushoorn.nl) to develop and test an affordable and easy-to-use smart drone system for wildlife protection. The original goal was to participate in the Wildlife Conservation UAV Challenge - an international challenge to build an unmanned aircraft to assist with counter poaching and illicit wildlife trafficking. Even though the challenge itself was cancelled the team was committed to the cause and decided to continue developing a proof of concept of a tool that helps rangers protect wildlife reserves.

In November 2014, the team flew to a private nature reserve in South Africa to test the proof of concept in collaboration with rangers. The trip to South Africa made a big impression on the founding team and so they decided to continue their efforts as a company. In 2016 we shifted our focus to automated visual inspections and launched the for-profit corporation Birds.ai. We learned that drones are great tools to collect images and can be used for numerous applications, but going through these images to find what you are looking for is a dull, time consuming and labour-intensive task. By automating visual inspections, we are able to provide inspectors of Solar Farms, wind turbines, cell towers, power lines with health information to keep their vital assets in top condition.
